Affluent Wants vs. Needs

We already know that a good portion of saving money (both saving in savings accounts and saving on spending) can be determining whether something that we think we need is really a need or not and whether we could really do without that need. The underlying problem there is that as we become more affluent, wants become needs. This isn’t a new problem.

What those wants are has changed, but the problem remains.  In the days of the Roman empire, things like Oranges were considered a luxury.  They didn’t have the ability to transport them as quickly as we can now.  Because they were unable to get them somewhere quickly, they would spoil in all but a few cases.  The elites of the time were affluent enough that they could afford to dedicate a whole team of chariots and riders to move the Oranges from the orchard to their homes as quickly as was possible in the times.  Today, oranges are a bit more commonplace.  And, as such, aren’t nearly the luxury that they were to ancient civilizations.  The same is true for many different commodities.

And so, we can be said to be equivalent of a Roman elitist.  But, even as we are equal in many ways when we compare our access to certain things, we are not equal in socio-economic standing.  We aren’t elitists.  We’re the modern day equivalent, in that way, of your average, everyday Roman.  Just as the elite Romans had their scarce commodities, the elites of our society have theirs.  Bentleys, Mansions, Lear Jets, and Caviar just to name a few.

One of the hazards of harnessing our personal finances is that we may begin to loosen our own self-made restrictions and some of our wants might become needs.  Sure, a private jet would be nice.  I want a private jet.  I certainly don’t need one, though.  But, what if my prowess with personal finance (stop laughing) causes me to become more wealthy than I could possibly imagine.  As it becomes easier and easier for me to get that jet without breaking the bank, it also becomes easier and easier for that want to morph into a need.

A jet is a bit of an extreme example.  But, apply the same concept to one of the things that you want now.  Here’s a perfect example from my own financial adventures.  About 7 years ago, shortly after my wife and I became engaged, we decided that we needed to move from the apartment we were in and into something that was a little bit more pet friendly.  If you’ve ever tried to have a 100+ pound dog in a one bedroom apartment, you know what I’m talking about.  Initially, we were talking about finding a house to rent that allowed pets.  However, the more we looked at it, the more we discussed buying a house.  We wanted to buy a house.  But, as we looked at houses to rent, we convinced ourselves that we needed a house.  And we bought one.  Now, 7-ish years later, we want to move into a bigger house to make room for our two children and a dog.  We certainly don’t need a bigger house.  But we want one.  As we get a better handle on our finances, it’s very possible that what we want now will become a need if we let it.

I won’t say whether that will be a bad thing or not.  Some would argue that if we don’t truly need the bigger house, we shouldn’t buy it.  Others will say that if we have saved up and can afford it, we should go for it.  That’s not the point of this article though.  What is the point?

Awareness.  One of the most important factors in your personal finance journey will be how aware you are of your situation.  Being aware enough to understand what you can and cannot afford as well as what is and isn’t a need will be a determining factor in where your finances end up when you are ready to retire.  Moreover, being oblivious to your situation isn’t an excuse.  Be responsible for your situation.  Learn how to fix your mistakes.  And become aware of your situation so that you can make educated choices for your financial welfare.

New Home Sales Down

So, are you surprised by that news?  That new home sales dropped like a rock in May?  I can’t say that I am.  I try hard to keep my politics out of this site, but what the heck were they thinking?  If you look at the chart that CNNMoney has posted, you can clearly see that, not only did they drop, but they dropped below where they were before.

And obviously, there is a very nice spike for a while.  Incentives do make a bit of a difference.  And, in all honesty, if we had been in a situation where we felt we could afford a new home, we would have jumped at the opportunity to take advantage of those incentives.  But the spike was just that.  A small percentage of people taking advantage of an incentive that made it very attractive to buy a new house.  What it didn’t do was return home sales to anything like previous numbers.  In fact, it didn’t even get the numbers back to 50% of what they were in 2000!  And now, after the incentives have expired, they dropped 33% to an all-time new low. The last time the numbers were this low was in 1981!

I think everybody has the right to purchase a home.  You shouldn’t be dis-allowed from purchasing a home.  But, you still have to pay for it!  Owning a home is not a right.  The ability to purchase one if you can afford it is.  Years and years of politicians buying votes by pushing lenders to finance houses to people who couldn’t afford them is what caused the housing market (and our economy as a whole) to be in the condition it is in.  And that crashs’ ripples are still being felt throughout the country and the world.  Creating incentives to buying a home just extends that streak.  People see that $8000 and think that they can afford a home that they really can’t because they will get a nice $8000 check to help pay it down.  But, when that money comes around, what are they going to do with it?  Spend it.

And in five years, when those mortgages adjust, we’ll have a nice little mess to figure out again.  Sure, it won’t be anywhere near as bad as the current one, but it’ll be there.  If only we could teach people to be responsible consumers.  To not buy what they cannot afford, and to only spend what they earn or less.  If we could do that, then they wouldn’t need those incentives to buy a home.  They might actually be able to afford it without them.

Financial Gluttony

Gluttony is all around us.  I’m as guilty of it as you likely are.  The most classical example of gluttony is the act of eating much more than you need.  It leads to obesity, which is a rampant problem in this country.  Gluttony is described as the excessive indulgence in food and drink.

But, since this is a personal finance blog, let’s expand that description a bit and talk about financial gluttony. In fact, lets get down right philosophical about it.

The excessive indulgence of money. It may not be an official one of the 7 deadly sins, but it certainly is one of the deadly sins of personal finance.  It’s the rampant consumerism that often runs wild in our society.  Especially around this time of year.  We spend and spend and only stop when our credit runs out.  We give little thought to what the resulting consequences will be of our spending.  Over spending, over extending, gluttonous use of money.

The excessive indulgences of finance.  I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that many of you have probably not thought of this side of the argument.  What I’m talking about is the gluttonous use of financial maxims to save and perform frugal acts.  Moderation is good for all things, even the stuff that is good for us.  You’ll garner no argument from me that saving money and being frugal are good things.  But, it is possible to take it too far.  Making soup by boiling your old belts, not because you can’t afford food, but because it’ll save a buck or two is finance gluttony.  Ok, that’s a pretty extreme example, but you get the point.

What I really want to get at here is that there are extremes for everything.  If we eat too much we get fat.  If we spend too much we get broke.  If we save too much, we fail to appreciate what our money can do for us.  So, the next time you’re doing your budget or even just balancing your checkbook, take the time to think about that.  Are you being financially gluttonous?
